My Thyroid Story (and What Your Doctor Might Be Missing)

For years, I didn't understand what was happening to my body.
I was gaining weight no matter how little I ate or how hard I exercised.
I was always freezing, even when everyone else was comfortable. Like, legit, we'd go to the beach and the sun was out, and somehow I was freezing!
I felt irritable, anxious, and exhausted — surviving only on caffeine. My now husband and I would constantly argue because he has no idea what to expect from my emotional roller coaster.
And my cycle? Missing and irregular, despite being told over and over again that “birth control will regulate it.”
Every doctor I saw told me the same thing: eat less, work out more, go back on birth control. But none of that worked. In fact, the stress I was putting on my body was only making my thyroid function worse — and I didn't even know it.
The real kicker? Doctors were only testing my TSH. And while TSH is one marker of thyroid health, it doesn't tell the full story.
It wasn't until I finally went to a functional medicine doctor that the floodgates opened. I learned that your thyroid health is far more complex than a single number. I started doing my own research and discovered that with the right lifestyle shifts — diet, stress management, supplements, and more — I could actually support my thyroid in healing while on a low dose of medication. That turning point completely shifted how I felt in my body in a matter of months. More energy, weight started coming off so much easier, and I was starting to see new hair growth where I had lost it, hallelujah!!
Here's what I want you to know:
If your doctor is only testing TSH, you're missing critical pieces of the puzzle. You also need:
•Free T3 & Free T4 → show how well your thyroid hormones are being produced and converted.
•Reverse T3 → reveals if stress or inflammation is blocking your body from using thyroid hormone.
•Thyroid antibodies (TPO & TgAb) → detect autoimmunity like Hashimoto's that could be attacking your thyroid.
Without these, you can feel awful while being told “everything looks normal.”
