Ten years ago, I was in a place I wouldn’t wish on anyone.
I felt completely off.
Anxious.
Sad.
Like I couldn’t get out of bed.
I wasn’t sleeping, my hair was falling out, and no matter how little I ate or how much I exercised, the scale wouldn’t budge. My energy was at rock bottom, I was surviving off of cups and cups of caffeine just to function, and I was cold all. the. time.
It was beyond frustrating — it was scary. I didn’t recognize myself anymore.
And the hardest part? It took three years of seeing so many doctors to finally get an answer: hypothyroidism.
When I finally had a name for what was going on, I felt both relief and determination. I started a deep dive into every piece of research I could find to figure out what I could do beyond just taking medication that might help me feel better and support my thyroid long-term.
By no means am I saying medication is bad — I still take it to this day. However, through years of lifestyle changes, I’ve managed to reduce my dose to the lowest possible level and have regained my energy, metabolism, and mood.
That diagnosis was also the catalyst for my career in women’s health and hormones. It’s why I do what I do today — because I never want another woman to feel dismissed, ignored, or left in the dark about her health.
What You Need to Know About Hypothyroidism
Your thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in your neck, but it controls much more than most people realize.
It influences:
• Metabolism (how you burn calories)
• Body temperature regulation
• Energy levels
• Mood
• Hair, skin, and nail health
• Digestion
• Heart rate
When your thyroid underperforms, every cell in your body feels it.
Common Symptoms of Hypothyroidism
• Fatigue and low energy
• Weight gain (or inability to lose weight)
• Feeling cold all the time
• Constipation
• Dry skin and hair
• Hair thinning or loss (including the outer third of your eyebrows)
• Depression or low mood
• Slowed heart rate
• Brain fog and poor concentration
• Brittle nails
Two Main Types of Hypothyroidism
- Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis – An autoimmune condition where your immune system attacks your thyroid, causing inflammation and reduced function over time
- Primary Hypothyroidism (non-autoimmune) – Usually due to nutrient deficiencies, stress, pituitary issues, or other non-autoimmune causes.
What You Can Do to Support Your Thyroid
(Alongside working with your doctor and taking prescribed medication if needed)
- Get the right labs: Not just TSH, but Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies.
- Optimize nutrient intake: Selenium, zinc, iodine (if not contraindicated), vitamin D, and iron are all important for thyroid function.
- Support your adrenals: Chronic stress can blunt thyroid hormone conversion.
- Balance blood sugar: Large spikes and crashes can interfere with thyroid health.
- Eat enough protein: Protein provides the amino acids needed to make thyroid hormones.
- Reduce inflammation: For autoimmune hypothyroidism, anti-inflammatory nutrition and lifestyle choices can make a big difference.
- Get quality sleep: Your thyroid needs rest to regulate metabolism and hormone balance.
Here’s the truth:
If you’ve been feeling “off” and you keep being told “everything looks normal,” it doesn’t mean it’s in your head. It may mean that no one has looked deeply enough yet.
I’ve walked this road myself, and I help women find answers and solutions every single day.
