If you've been feeling inexplicably exhausted lately, then keep reading! Today, I want to shed some light on two common conditions that often drain our energy: adrenal fatigue and hypothyroidism.
When I have a client come to me with complaints of low energy these are typically the biggest culprits.
So, what are these conditions all about, and why might they be the culprits behind your low energy levels?
Adrenal fatigue is a term used to describe a group of symptoms that occur when your adrenal glands, responsible for producing hormones like cortisol, become overwhelmed and unable to function optimally. Stress, lack of sleep, poor diet, and even excessive caffeine intake can all contribute to the development of adrenal fatigue.
If you’re dealing with adrenal fatigue you’ll be feeling extremely tired, like it’s hard to get out of bed in the morning, like you can’t manage any stress, you’re constantly craving sweet or salty foods, and you have brain fog beyond belief. Quite the cocktail, right? I know first-hand how overwhelming this can be.
On the other hand, hypothyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland doesn't produce enough of the hormones that regulate your metabolism. The causes of hypothyroidism can vary, ranging from an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto's thyroiditis to nutritional deficiencies or even certain medications.
Feeling excessively tired, experiencing weight gain, feeling cold easily, having dry skin, and feeling mentally foggy are a few telltale signs of hypothyroidism. Trust me, I've been there too, and it's not a fun place to be!
It’s absolutely possible to be dealing with both at the same time. I would nap in my office. Crave junk food. Feel like I couldn’t get a creative idea out.
